This letter  was offered as report and  explanation of the actions of the Board of World Missions to accept the resignations of 10 key people on the staff and the director who said they could not faithfully continue their work due to official positions of the Church as stated in Resolutions and actions at both the Southern  and Northern Synods in the summer of 2002. Bob Sawyer tried to arrange to deliver this message to a couple of churches in person on the same Sunday that the Media article was published after taking issue with the way the media had written the article.

Note that much of the concern about Southern Synod surrounds the handling of  Synod Resolution on Affirming Jesus Christ as the only way to Salvation  that was rejected.

February 8, 2003 A Message to the Church from the Directors of the Board of World Mission

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

We, the directors of the Moravian Board of World Mission, met in a special called meeting on February 7 and 8, for the purpose of dealing with staff resignations. Throughout the time together we were guided by a principle we adopted years ago: "consult God first." In the midst of pain, difficulty, and differences we saw gifts of the Holy Spirit break forth and by that Spirit we were led to these conclusions:

First, we individually and corporately reaffirmed the foundation for our mission: the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and the uniqueness and finality of the person and work of Jesus Christ, that God has revealed himself once and for all in his Son, Jesus Christ, that our Lord has redeemed us with the whole of humanity by his death and resurrection.

Second, after a great deal of prayerful thought and conversation we accepted with great regret the individually submitted resignations of four staff members as well as cross-cultural personnel (missionaries) serving in Asia and Mexico. The resignations are effective March 31, 2003.

Third, we affirmed our commitment to be a sending agency to unreached people. We are committed to continue work already in place in Asia and Mexico and plan to provide avenues for existing support of these ministries to continue. We will also allow for the development of new work in other areas of the world.

Resignations were accepted from the Rev. E. Hampton Morgan, Executive Director and from the Director of Intercultural Ministries, the Director of World Mission Education, and the Associate Director of Asia Ministry. In addition we accepted resignations from five workers in foreign countries along with two workers preparing for cross-cultural service. We express deep appreciation for the dedication of these servants and for the countless ways they have been a blessing through their ministries. We affirm the vision they have brought to our relations with our partner provinces and to the development of new work in Asia and Mexico.

The resignations stemmed from each person's deep convictions in two specific areas: (1) the approval of legislation by the 2002 synod of the Northern Province concerning homosexuality; and (2) the manner in which the 2002 Southern Province Synod dealt with a resolution on the finality of Jesus Christ. We value and respect these convictions and recognize the importance of people speaking openly about them. We are also aware that persons of sincere faith may have different interpretations of Scripture. But we agree that the lack of consensus in the broader church on issues related to homosexuality is not an insurmountable barrier to a vital world mission effort.

We are proceeding with the process of appointing an interim Executive Director as well as the search for permanent leadership. Our ongoing support of partner provinces will continue along with the work in Asia and Mexico.

We came together with uncertainty and anxiety. We left with another experience f God's strength in our weakness. We know that much work remains, but we saw anew that God has a broader vision for our church than we imagine.

Bishop Lane Sapp was present with us, led us in worship and prayer, and was instrumental in guiding us along the way. We offer our heartfelt thanks to him for walking this journey with us. We also express deep appreciation to the many persons who individually and corporately were upholding us in prayer during these last two days.

The Board serves on behalf of the Moravian Church in America, Northern and Southern Provinces, the Moravian Church in Alaska, and the Unity of Brethren Church in Texas. We invite your questions, concerns, and support as we move forward.

Your brothers and sisters in Christ,

Directors of the Board of World Mission Winston-Salem, NC
