Questions submitted in advance for PEC meeting at Olivet Moravian Church.

The following list of questions was submitted to the  PEC by  Olivet Moravian Church a couple of weeks in advance of the scheduled meeting.

Questions and concerns had been submitted by members, board members, and provincial affairs committee members  over actions and statements that have surrounded the ways some ministers have been encouraged to leave the pulpits and mission service of the Moravian Church while others are allowed to stay. Concerns also have emerged on our relationship with the World Council and National Council of Churches. Questions on these issues and others were submitted and addressed before an audience of board members, the provincial affairs committee and other members of Olivet as the PEC, Bishops and other Provincial leaders graciously accepted the invitation to meet on the evening of Aug 8th 2004.

QUESTIONS FOR THE PROVINCIAL ELDERS CONFERENCE FOR THE JOINT BOARD MEETING ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 8

THE MESSIAH/MACEDONIA ISSUES
Did Macedonia split because of the way the PEC handled Truman Dunn?

Did you ever tell Greg Little during his one year of not meeting with the PEC that he was endangering the withdrawal of his call?

Why did you want to meet with Greg alone?

Why wasn't some form of consistency used in the Rev. Dunn and the Rev. Little case?

It does not seem fitting that one minister has to leave his church because of his beliefs and another minister stays in his church, when his beliefs are against Moravian doctrine. Why can't PEC oust the one who goes against Moravian beliefs?"

Why does the Moravian Church have a minister preaching when he claims you don't need Jesus Christ to enter the kingdom of heaven! ! ! ! !

What is being done to keep this situation from spreading? What is being done to improve communication?

BELIEFS
Rev. Bob Sawyer made a statement to the Winston Salem Journal concerning Truman Dunn, that Dunn's assertions "brought into public discussion issues that everybody knew were there and gave us the impetus to talk about something we didn't want to talk about,".
a. Is the Moravian denomination being moved toward a more adequate theology?
b. Do the PEC members of the Southern Province believe that the Holy Bible is the only   inspired, infallible, and eternal Word of God that must be accepted by faith?
c. The Bible tells us many times that Jesus is the only way to salvation and no man comes to the Father except through him. Why is that an issue that "we didn't want to talk about" if we are a denomination based on a Christian foundation?
d. What "other issues" are there that we don't want to talk about?

Does the PEC believe there is a literal Heaven and Hell, and why? Is Heaven reserved for only born-again Christians or will people of other faiths be allowed? What scripture( s ) do you use to support your answer?

Does the PEC believe that God will only allow born-again Christians to spend eternity in Heaven?

What are the PEC's beliefs on "inclusive" and "exclusivism"?

How does the PEC define the term "local church" and what is its purpose, as related to the Moravian church?

Why is it taking so long to develop a statement of "Who we are and what we believe, and when will that statement will be completed?

What are the Moravian "Essentials" and Non-essentials" in light of Rev. Bob Sawyers comments that "we do choose to live and serve in the present, not in the past" and that "Ministry is changing in a culture that is changing, and that brings diversity, conflict and anxiety". What measures, if any, are the PEC taking to resolve the conflicts and anxiety?

What is the PEC's answer to the question "Is it right to judge?", and how do you support your answer?

What is the PEC's position on: (a) moral separation,
(b) doctrinal separation, and
(c) separation from other brethren who refuse to adhere to biblical teachings and principals? How do you support your answers?

What is the PEC's position on separation of Church and State? Should the Moravian church make a public statement on the removing God, the Ten Commandments, and other religious references from the public in the United States?

What is the PEC's position on the war in Iraq and the Arab-Israeli situation? How do you support your answer?

What is the PEC's definition of the term "social justice" and what is your position on income redistribution. How do you support your answer?

What is the PEC's position on supporting Global Ethics? What do you use as a basis for your answer?

WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES/NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CHURCHESI RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER DENOMINATIONS
In light of the stated agenda of the World Council of Church and the National Council of Churches, how can the PEC continue to encourage financial support of these organizations?

How can we, as followers of Christ, and based on the statements pushed upon us by the WCC and the Baar Statement truly stand up for what Christ taught us? (There was a longer statement shared with this question, but this was the question)

What are our Moravian goals and objectives leading to consolidation with other churches for the purpose of a one church denomination?

RELATION WITH OTHER DENOMINATIONS
What is the status of dialog with the intent of full communion between the Moravian Church and the Episcopal Church, and how are the doctrinal differences being resolved?

Why would the PEC/Leaders of the Moravian Church South, even consider continuing dialogue with the Episcopal Church USA, with leaders such as Bishop Frank Griswald, John Spong, etc?

OTHER RELIGIONS
What is the PEC's position on religious pluralism and why?

How does the PEC individually answer the questions:
a. "Is God listening to my Hindu neighbor's prayer?" Yes or no and why or why not? b. Do all religions pray to the same God even though they recognize him by different
names?

UNITY AND WORLD PEACE
What is the Moravian churches involvement in achieving unity and world peace? More
specifically does the PEC believe that is an attainable goal and what is the PEC's role in achieving that goal?

How does the PEC define diversity and tolerance and at what cost, in terms of "drawing a line in the sand", would justify unity and world peace?

HOMOSEXUALITY
What is the PEC's stance on homosexuality?

Why does the PEC not have a firm public stand on denouncing homosexual activities?

How does the PEC justify allowing the "Gay and Lesbian Moravians" to advertise in the "Moravian Magazine"?

Does the PEC individually and personally approve of the position taken by 2002 Northern Provincial Synod in regard to homosexuality? Would you support a similar resolution in the next Southern Provincial Synod?

FINANCES/MINISTERS
How many ministers are not serving a church but have positions in another capacity such as Craig Atwood and Brad Bennett?

Does the provincial budget pay their salary?

Will the provincial budget have a large increase because so many members have left the Moravian Church?

Why cannot each of our churches be financially independent of the PEC?
