Many letters have come in suggesting some very good ways for our
Church to respond to the Super Bowl program on CBS this Year.
First check the web site of the Moravian Supported Comenius Foundation ( http://www.comeniusfoundation.org/index )whose expresses one of its' goals :
Request guidance and action that represents God's best interest in this issue.
Lee,
I just received this. Thought you might find it helpful.

Subject: LAST NIGHT'S SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW
This nation, this culture on display before their eyes: Did they even wonder if this was the same America that God had at one time made into such a great nation, that He had blessed with prosperity and success unparalleled in the accounts of human history? ..." To: FRIENDS From: BILL JOHNSON Re: LAST NIGHT'S SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW Date: FEBRUARY 2, 2004 LAST NIGHT'S SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW WAS DAMAGING AND A MARK OF EVIL UPON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. MANY CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WERE JOLTED BY WICKEDNESS. FIRST THIS IMPORTANT COMMENTARY: When Janet Jackson came on stage with her troupe of male and female sex slaves, when she danced with girls dressed as men and men so decorated with make-up and costume as to look like participants in a homosexual transvestite rally, what did our sons think last night? When P. Diddy and Nelly came on stage with what appeared to be a high school cheerleading team, when these men exhorted the girls to "take off their clothes" because they "were looking for the right time to shoot their steeze (seed)" and "can't nobody stop the juice," and when the girls did tear off their cheerleading uniforms revealing much skimpier garments underneath, what did our daughters think last night? When Kid Rock came on stage draped in an American flag, when he sang about "finding a spot to pimp, I'm a Kid Rock up and down your block, with a bottle of Scotch and watch lots of crotch," when scantily clad women waved the same flags behind him that our best sons died for, what did our country think last night? When Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake culminated the event by simulating sex acts on stage leaving nothing to the imagination, when Timberlake tore off the covering of her breast in an act that was as well planned as it was well lied about, when the half-time show ended with a half-naked woman on the stage, what did the world think last night? This nation, this culture on display before their eyes: Did they even wonder if this was the same America that God had at one time made into such a great nation, that He had blessed with prosperity and success unparalleled in the accounts of human history? Can we even wonder anymore? The damage afflicted upon this nation by the indifference of the church and the de facto support if not gross participation of Christians in the immorality of our day is irreparable. How many thousands of churches across this nation made this pagan ritual the very centerpiece of their worship yesterday! How many thousands of children from Christian families learned more yesterday about the pleasures of indiscriminate alcohol consumption and illicit sexuality from the advertisements of soul-less, conscious-less corporations than they did about the character of a Holy God and His desires for us. We are engaged in a war for the hearts and souls of our children and the very future of our nation. We saw this last night. As God's people, we don't have the choice of whether we will fight or not. We must fight, or we do not love Him or His creation as we ought. How many Christians across this nation subscribe to AOL? Do you? If you do, find someone else (link to AFO - www.afo.net). There are thousands of internet service providers to choose from, thousands who are not the OFFICIAL SPONSOR of the halftime show of Super Bowl 2004. By aligning your disposable income with your moral convictions, you are taking the first step towards not only being a steward of the blessings God has given you, but towards making a positive impact upon the nation in which God has placed you to live. Please, take the first of these steps today. JOE VANDERJAGT, ADA STAFF AFTER 4 PM (EST) TODAY WE'LL HAVE COMMENTARY REGARDING LAST NIGHT'S ADVERTISERS AND ADDRESS CONTACTS (BOTH PRO AND CON) SOME COMPANIES ACTUALLY DID PRODUCE DECENT ADS. Lee,
I too was disturbed, but (given the declining culture in which we live),
not surprised by the Superbowl halftime show. I cannot stand MTV. Almost
everything it does is distasteful. It is one of the primary reasons we
only have basic cable in our house. When MTV was allowed to produce this
event for a worldwide audience, CBS made a deal with the devil and
opened the door for this kind of raunchiness.
Lost in the uproar over the Janet Jackson nudity stunt, has been
any outcry over Kid Rock's desecration of the American flag. At a time
when our nation is on a heightened terror alert and we have young men
and women of our nation's military dying on foreign soil, for him to cut
a slit in the middle of an American flag and wear it like a poncho is
highly offensive.
I will be fashioning some kind of response and dealing with it here at
XXXXXX Church. I'll let you know more as those plans are finalized.
In Christ,

Here's another message that came while I was typing my message to you.

Subject: The exposure of Janet Jackson's breast in front of
millions of viewers
February 2, 2004 URGENT: TVC's Executive Director Andrea Lafferty will be on Fox News' Neil Cavuto today to discuss the Janet Jackson controversy and on NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. Please tune in! Dear TVC Supporter: Yesterday's Superbowl half-time show was an outrageous display of soft-core pornography. The exposure of Janet Jackson's breast in front of millions of viewers is only one of the sexual outrages committed by MTV's production. Viewers-including millions of children-were exposed to crotch grabbing by P. Diddy, simulated lesbian sex acts, dancing transvestites, and scantily clad cheerleaders. TVC issued the following statement to the press about this MTV event. We are urging you to contact CBS, MTV, and the NFL offices to express your anger over this pornographic half-time program. Contact information is included below Mrs. Lafferty's statement.
Call Them, THEN Email Them As Well!! CONTACT INFORMATION: CBS: President Leslie Moonves, 323-575-2345 MTV: Chairman Tom Freston, 212-258-8000; VIACOM: (owns CBS and MTV): CEO Sumner Redstone, 212-975-3247 NFL: Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, National Football League,

Lee,
I wanted to pass along this email I received from the Christian
Coalition regarding the Superbowl halftime show and also let you know
what I have done and plan to do regarding this.
Today, using the links provided on one the previous messages I forwarded
to you, I sent emails to the FCC chairman, to both our North Carolina
senators and to our congressman demanding that the FCC fine CBS and each
of its affiliates for this indecent broadcast and that our senators and
congressman speak out with moral clarity on this issue. I also took
steps to file an official complaint with the FCC (again using a link
from one of the messages I previously sent you) against WFMY-TV2. The
link took me to a site where, based on the information I entered, an
official complaint letter was composed which I have printed out and will
mail tomorrow.
I would also suggest that you check out an organization called The
Parents Television Council (PTC). You can find them on the web at www.ParentsTV.org. We
post the PTC newsletter on our church bulletin board, have a link to
their site on our church webpage, and have encouraged our members to
join and support the council's work.
It is kind of ironic that I had composed an article for our
February newsletter here at our church urging our members to contact
local TV stations and praise or protest the things we see on television.
I listed phone numbers for the local NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX and UPN
affiliates. I hope some of our folks make use of that information (I'll
be reminding them this Sunday).
I have thought about asking our members here to consider giving up
TV for lent. The only thing that gives me pause is knowing that
so many of them are die-hard fans of ACC basketball who think they
can't live without seeing Carolina, Duke, NC State, Wake, etc. play.
Our youth group is going on retreat this weekend and will be using some
of that time to process our reactions and response to the Superbowl
indecencies. Personally, unless the kids decide otherwise, I would
be OK with doing a Souper-bowl fundraiser for the soup kitchen
again next year. I would also be OK with our group gathering for
another Superbowl "Party", however, I will take steps to
procure some Christ centered, God honoring materials
to show at half-time (I am pretty sure there are some para-church
organizations that still produce pieces especially made for half-time
evangelism).
Blessings,
P.S. It also occurs to me that dealing with these kinds of issues should
be right up the alley of the Comenius Foundation and its Changing the
Channels initiative. However, I checked out the website earlier this
evening and didn't see anything about the Superbowl. You could contact
The Rev. John Jackman, head of the Comenius Foundation, and see what his
thoughts and plans are.
